Maillé, martyred village
Father André Payon
Maillé, the martyred village of Indre-et-Loire department in France, was tragically torn apart on 25 August 1944 when German soldiers massacred 124 of its people, aged between 3 months and 89 years, and destroyed almost all the houses in the village.
Written a short time after the tragedy, this account was the first text to report on the massacre of the inhabitants. The author, Father André Payon, witnessed the massacre. During the following weeks, he recorded and compiled the testimonies of his parishioners, in order that this drama should not be forgotten.
