The Month of the documentary film

Each year, the site of the former concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau welcomes over a million visitors from all around the world. Whether we denounce it or congratulate ourselves on it, the development of tourism of Memory has transformed the individual experience of the visit to a collective experience.

Inside this colorful, multicultural crowd, we put our feet into those visitors, a look among others, to question the use we make of our places of Memory and the sense we make in pacing up and recapturing them by our presence.

How to behave when you visit a place that has witnessed so many horrors? How to behave in a place of Memory?

For his documentary, Aurélien Vernhes-Lermusiaux immersed himself among the daily visitors of the Auschwitz camp in Poland. Without comment or judgment, he interrogates the viewer on both the memory tourism in general approach and his own posture in such places. A surprising meeting with different profiles of visitors, whether alone, in groups or with their high school class.

The Maison du Souvenir de Maille and its partners invite you to discover this disturbing documentary, in the presence of a member of the production team. The screening will be followed by a discussion on the impact and issues arising mass tourism in places of Memory, including the implications of a school trip at these sites.
